We are delighted to announce the award of a Vision Fund grant to the historic Refreshment Rooms Pub and Restaurant in Cymer in the Afan Valley. Run by resident owners Neil and Bethan Little, the 130-year old Refreshment Rooms was previously a train station café/bar and retains its unique and original character. Although many customers are local, the ‘Refresh’ is also popular with tourists – including cyclists and railway heritage enthusiasts.
The £20,000 grant will support essential upgrades and enhancements to the building, including the replacement of restaurant furniture, improved all ability access, installation of new double-glazed windows to reduce energy costs, improved toilet facilities and a revamp of the outdoor veranda area (which has great valley views), to enable year-round use.
Over the coming year, cooking hours will be extended, and it’s hoped that customer numbers will increase, leading to further local employment opportunities. The Refresh is a special venue in the upper Afan, with strong links to its industrial past and providing a valuable service to community members and to visitors. We are pleased to be able to support Neil and Bethan in their work to ensure that this lovely building is in active use and being cared for.
