Treherbert RFC was founded nearly 150 years ago and is steeped in mining history. The club is run by local volunteers for the benefit of the local community and is at the heart of Tynewydd at the top of the Rhondda valley. Their main aim is to encourage and increase rugby participation in the Treherbert ward, and they have a range of teams from seniors to youth, women’s to minis totalling 140 people weekly. The clubhouse is a well-used community building and is regularly used by around 350 people, including their members.

Treherbert RFC applied to the fund for their ‘Sport goes green’ project to complete repairs to their roof and install solar panels to help reduce energy costs. They, along with a number of other community buildings throughout the area of benefit, benefitted from a building survey / energy audit as part of scheme run by PyC, and since then have worked hard to make changes to make the clubhouse more energy efficient and this project is a continuation of that.

How does this meet the fund’s priorities?

  • Buildings powered by renewables
  • Make the valleys an energy efficient, low consumption, energy area
  • Fit for purpose buildings and spaces
  • Provide sustainable community facilities and transport for groups of all ages to meet

dependency by the community

“This club plays a vital role in our community, and to maintain the impact we have, we must cut costs and energy use. For this reason, we are happy to have been awarded funding from Pen y Cymoedd towards solar panels and battery storage. The PyC team has been really helpful, and the application was straightforward” – Rowley Pryse, Treherbert RFC.

“We are dedicated to helping community buildings become more energy efficient and as a fund we recognise the importance of community organisations like Treherbert RFC. Their clubhouse is a focal point for their activities and is well used by their members, as well as the local community. We are thrilled to be able to support them with this project to ensure that the organisation can continue to support their members and the community for years to come” – Shayla, Fund Support Officer – Community, Pen y Cymoedd
